The family of a 19-year-old Long Beach man killed in Monday night’s shooting will speak tonight during a gathering near the site of the incident where community leaders will call for peace and discuss new strategies to end violence.

The event is scheduled to take place at 7:00PM on Thursday, April 21 in Rosa Parks Park, located at 15th Street and Alamitos Avenue. From the park, participants will walk two blocks to the site of the shooting where Delhaun Jackson was fatally shot and three others were injured.

Organizers—including the Long Beach Ministers Alliance and Los Angeles Civil Rights Association—plan to announce the launch of a violence interruption project called #AwakenLB during the gathering, according to a release.

The goals of the movement are three-fold: encourage community members to engage in violence prevention resources already in place by the city and private sectors; better articulate the specific needs of the community with regard to policing, support, employment and housing; and champion and mediate proactive conversations between potential violence perpetrators, organizers stated.

“We want to come in and stop the violence and killing in the community,” said Eddie Jones of the LACRA. “We want to awaken new ideas […] and help people.”

Those ideas mainly revolve around job creation and crime prevention programs.

Two other similar events will take place in North Long Beach in the coming weeks at locations where there is a high amount of crime, according to Gregory Sanders of the LBMA.

So far, there have been 55 reported shootings in Long Beach this year, according to Post records.

The most recent shooting took place this afternoon and resulted in the injury of a man.
