A Long Beach man was killed early Thursday morning after he lost control of his vehicle, fell into an embankment and crashed into a tree on the Long Beach (710) Freeway, authorities said.

Shawn Petite, 35—who was not wearing a seatbelt—was partially ejected through the sunroof of his 2009 Pontiac Vibe, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

He was the only occupant of the car.

Long Beach officers responded to the traffic collision at 12:11AM on Thursday November 5, on the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway, at West Shoreline Drive, south of the Sixth Street off-ramp, where they discovered the overturned car.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) paramedics determined the driver dead at the scene, officials said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the motorist was traveling southbound on the freeway when, according to witnesses, he lost control of the vehicle and it began to spin sideways.

“The vehicle slid toward the west curb, down the west embankment, overturned, and collided with a tree,” officials stated. “It appears the driver was not seat belted at the time of the collision and was partially ejected through the sunroof.”

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
