Shortly after being recognized as sitting among the nation’s top 3% of hospitals, Long Beach Memorial Hospital was recognized on Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with its Gold Medal of Honor.
Long Beach Memorial was just one of two hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties and eight hospitals in California venerated for outstanding efforts in saving lives through organ donations.
According to the a release from Memorial, The Gold Medal—part of a national Workplace Partnership for Life Campaign—is given to hospitals whose organ donation rates greatly exceed national standards. Long Beach Memorial’s thorough practices for donations means more lives can be saved through organ transplants.
“This recognition reflects the success of our OneLegacy partnership and tremendous efforts of our hospital staff dedicated to saving and enhancing lives,” Diana Hendel, CEO of Long Beach Memorial.
According to Hendel, Long Beach Memorial helps to answer the needs of 123,000 people nationwide waiting for transplants.
Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach Memorial’s sister facility, was one of 22 children’s hospitals nationwide recognized with an HHS Gold Medal for outstanding rates in organ donations. According to the release it is the only California hospital additionally honored with a Pediatric Distinction Award.
