Long Beach native Matthew Vaughn, a senior chief petty officer with the Coast Guard, was promoted to officer-in-charge of the Los Angeles/Long Beach Coast Guard Station during a change-of-command ceremony at the San Pedro base on Friday morning, officials announced.
Station Los Angeles/Long Beach will be Vaughn’s third command as officer-in-charge of a small-boat station—having previously served at stations in Boston, Massachusetts and Port Aransas, Texas, according to a press release.
Transferring his post on Friday was Senior Chief Petty Officer David Bullard, who served as officer-in-charge of the station since 2011.
The ceremony was presided over by Capt. Jennifer Williams, commander of the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach.
The change-of-command ceremony is a time-honored tradition and deeply rooted in Coast Guard and Naval history. The event signifies a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability for the command, the release adds.
