3:01pm | The Long Beach Police Department  released on Monday afternoon the names and ages of two local men who were arrested early Sunday morning by SWAT officers after the suspects allegedly committed two armed street robberies.

The two men were identified as LaBron Burns, 20, and Alexander Carter, 18, both of Long Beach.

Sgt. Rico Fernandez said that booking photos of the suspects are not being released at this time.

Burns and Carter allegedly used a handgun to rob a victim just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, near the intersection of Cherry Avenue and Florida Street, according to information provided by Fernandez.

Minutes later, police received a second call for service from another victim regarding a similar armed street robbery that had just occurred a few blocks away in the 1800 block of East Third Street, Fernandez said.

Based on the description each victim gave police, it was determined that the robberies had been committed by the same suspects.

“Believing the suspects were still in the general vicinity, numerous police officers responded to the area,” Fernandez said.

When a patrol officer spotted two men  near Third and Esperanza Avenue who fit the description of the suspects, the officer attempted to detain them. The men, however, fled on foot, darting into the surrounding residential neighborhood, Fernandez said.

Officers quickly set up a containment area around the neighborhood, which shut down a section of Fourth Street  to through traffic beginning just east of Orange Avenue. As the containment area was established, the suspects surfaced and at least one officer discharged his service weapon, tough no one was hit or injured, Fernandez said.

One of the suspects was immediately taken into custody following the shooting, while his partner retreated back into the neighborhood. The LBPD’s SWAT team was activated to carry out the search for the second suspect, Fernandez said.

SWAT officers using a K-9 eventually located the hiding suspect, who was taken into custody after a K( unit made contact with the suspect, Fernandez said.

A handgun was found near where the suspect had been found hiding, and detectives continue to investigate the possibility of that gun being the firearm used to commit the robberies.

Police also continue to probe whether Burns and Carter are the same to suspects responsible for a string of similar armed street robberies that took place during the last week of April.

“The investigation continues, and detectives are looking into the possibility of these two suspects being involved in other robberies,” Fernandez said in a 2:56 p.m. e-mail on Monday.

The Long Beach Post  previously reported on April 28 that police were on the hunt for two male suspects responsible for a string of armed street robberies that took place the night of Tuesday, April 26, and in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 27, when two men robbed four victims in three separate incidents.

The descriptions victims gave to police of the suspects responsible for the April robberies are similar to the descriptions given by Saturday night’s victims, and Burns and Carter both fit those descriptions.
