A Long Beach Transit bus driver was trapped under his steering wheel for nearly two hours after the bus collided with a pick-up truck in Lakewood Wednesday evening, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Rick Flores said.

LACoFD Lakewood crash 2The crash was reported at 6:12PM and happened at the intersection of Woodruff Avenue and Centralia Street. The collision caused the large bus to run into a traffic signal.

Six persons were injured, but only five individuals were taken to a local trauma center with unknown conditions, including the bus driver, according to Flores.

Paramedics were able to free the bus driver trapped by the steering wheel—which was wrapped completely around him—an hour and a half later by cutting and removing the metal, Flores said.

The city’s public works department arrived on scene to secure utilities, officials said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials with the Lakewood Station are investigating the cause of the crash.
