A Long Beach woman was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in state prison for giving her 11-month-old daughter methadone, leading to her overdose and death in 2013, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Charissa Ranee Bailey, 31, was immediately sentenced after she pleaded no contest to one felony count of willful cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily injury at Monday’s court appearance. She also admitted to a special allegation that she personally inflicted great bodily injury on a child under the age of five, officials stated.

On April 24, 2013, a clinic supplied Bailey with a week’s supply of methadone. She was told to keep the drug in a locked container away from children, according to the prosecutor.

“The next day, Bailey’s 11-month-old daughter was found dead from a methadone overdose,” according to Deputy District Attorney Troy Davis of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case.

Bailey, who Davis said was a drug addict at the time of the crime, had given the baby methadone to soothe her.

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) investigated the case.
