A man hit by a vehicle when he was crossing a street against a red light in Long Beach Wednesday night remained in critical condition Thursday morning, authorities said.

Officers responded to the intersection of Seventh Street and Cherry Avenue at about 11:35PM regarding an injury collision, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesperson Nancy Pratt said.

Investigators determined the man attempted to cross Seventh Street against a red light when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Seventh Street, she said.

The driver who hit the pedestrian stopped and called police, according to Long Beach police Lt. Jeff Berkenkamp.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The motorist—who Berkenkamp said waited at the scene and was not impaired—was interviewed and released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
