A man was killed Saturday after driving off of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Long Beach into an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP officials identified the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, as 38-year-old Abelardo Lopez Cruz of Santa Ana.

Authorities said the crash was reported at 7:10PM on Saturday, July 25, on the southbound side of the freeway, south of Carson Street.

The vehicle was a 2003 Ford Ranger that came to rest upside down in a concrete drainage ditch, according to the CHP.
