UPDATE | The man who died after he crashed his car into a pole at the Port of Long Beach Thursday morning at Pico Avenue and Pier C has been identified as Michael Levand, 46, of Long Beach.

Long Beach police say the car was southbound on Pico Avenue, fast approaching Pier C Street, when the driver “attempted to conduct an unsafe lane change” and struck a raised median.

The driver then lost control of his 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, which struck a pole at the southwest corner of the intersection, according to authorities.

On 09/22/2016 at 11:48AM | A man in his 40s died in a single-vehicle crash at the Port of Long Beach (POLB) Thursday morning, according to authorities.

Officers were called to Pico Avenue and Pier C Street at 6:45AM regarding a single vehicle traffic accident, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel declared the driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, dead at the scene.

Authorities withheld the victim’s name, pending family notification.

Collision Investigation detectives are investigating the crash.
