Police say they are investigating a crash that killed a man in a wheelchair who was crossing Atlantic Avenue mid-block Thursday around 8 p.m.

The crash happened on Atlantic Avenue near Spring Street, a few blocks from Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The man in the wheelchair attempted to cross the street outside of a marked sidewalk, police said.

A 21-year-old Long Beach man driving a Ford Escape hit the man, who ended up lying in the northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue near 29th Street, police said. Officers also found his damaged wheelchair in another part of the roadway, according to the LBPD.

When officers got to the scene, the man was unconscious and not breathing, police said. Officers began life-saving measures until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics arrived and took the man to a local hospital, where he died, according to authorities.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, and detectives do not believe he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the crash, according to the LBPD.

Police asked that anyone who may have witnessed this incident to call Det. Sirilo Garcia at 562-570-7355.
