10:30am | Police have arrested a 26-year old man from Texas for the murder of one man and the attempted murder of another after a shooting broke out in downtown Long Beach this weekend.

Elbert Haskins was arrested and booked for the murder of 38-year old John Evans of San Pedro and the attempted murder of a 16-year old boy from Long Beach. Haskins and others were apparently visiting friends at a residence near the 1900 block of Pine Avenue when a verbal dispute broke out. Police believe that Haskins pulled out a handgun and fired at the two victims. Evans was struck in the upper body and died at a local hospital. The boy was also struck in the upper body and taken to a hospital, where his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Police responded to the “shots fired” call at 12:06am Sunday, and a quick investigation led them to Haskins in the 700 block of East Pacific Coast Highway, where the suspect was arrested. He is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail. The incident is still under investigation and authorities have not released the reason for the argument that led to the shooting. Anyone with information should call Homicide Detectives David Rios and Huge Cortes at 562.570.7244.
