The former Gold’s Gym location on Pine Avenue in Downtown Long Beach is being converted into a Planet Fitness, according to the city’s Development Services Department.

Crews have already begun early demolition work in preparation for more extensive work to be done to the inside of the building, which will include new locker rooms, a new ceiling and replacement of the storefront, Rick De La Torre, a spokesperson for the department said Monday.

Gold’s Gym had been located at the corner of Fourth Street and Pine Avenue for 35 years before deciding to close that location and temporarily move to the corner of Fourth and Long Beach Boulevard last year.

The temporary location will serve as its home until a new two-story location is completed at the Pike Outlets near the Nike store. That Gold’s Gym at the Pike is expected to open in mid-2023.

Planet Fitness is a nationwide budget-friendly gym that has nearly 90 locations in the greater Los Angeles and Orange County regions. It offers low-cost monthly memberships for as little as $10 per month.

When it does open, the Downtown location will become the third Planet Fitness in the city, joining a location in North Long Beach and one near the Traffic Circle.

De La Torre said that Planet Fitness filed several applications for construction in August, a few months after Gold’s Gym announced the closure of the Pine Avenue location. Construction permits for the interior improvements are expected to be issued soon, De La Torre said.

It’s unclear how long construction could take before the Downtown Planet Fitness opens. A representative from Planet Fitness did not respond to a request for comment about the new Downtown location.
