Numerous Long Beach public servants were on hand to celebrate the memory of Harry Bridges with a pancake breakfast Sunday, in honor of “Harry Bridges Day.”  Bridges was a dockworker icon and spearheaded a 1934 strike that united longshoremen from California to Washington, and led to the creation of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), of which he was President for four decades.

The event was held by 6th District Councilman Dee Andrews and drew the likes of Senator Alan Lowenthal, Representative Laura Richardson, Mayor Bob Foster, Vice-Mayor Val Lerch and Councilman Patrick O’Donnell, along with dozens of hungry residents ready to be served a pancake breakfast.

Photographer Vantha El was on hand to bring us these images.
