A 51-year-old Long Beach man who may have been intoxicated was killed after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the street in West Long Beach at about 10 p.m. Sunday, police said this morning.

The collision happened at 16th Street and Santa Fe Avenue, just south of Pacific Coast Highway.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the collision occurred when the pedestrian was crossing through the middle of the intersection eastbound outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle, which was traveling north on Santa Fe Avenue at 16th Street,” police said in a statement today.

The Long Beach Fire Department transported the man to a local hospital in critical but stable condition, according to a police statement. The man was pronounced deceased early Monday.

Police said it is suspected the pedestrian consumed alcohol prior to the collision. Toxicology tests are pending.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. He had a valid driver’s license, insurance and was not suspected of driving under the influence, police said.
