Long Beach police announced they arrested a sixth suspect in connection to the fatal “ambush-style” shooting of 18-year-old Eronald Deas in North Long Beach, one year ago.

Witnesses at the time said Deas had been walking through a residential neighborhood on East 69th Way when three people came around the corner and confronted him, then chased him down and shot him around 7 p.m.

Police for the first time gave some details of what happened that night, saying Deas was ambushed near his home in Long Beach. They also said detectives believe the suspects have gang affiliations while the victim did not.

Police had already arrested five other suspects in August in connection with the Oct. 6, 2019 shooting after serving search warrants in and around Long Beach. Court records show John Amos Jackson, 19, of Long Beach, Curtis Jackson, 27, of Bellflower, Jaquan Adams, 24, of Fullerton and Stevie Ray Deal, 19, of Los Angeles, all pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder in August.

In the latest, law enforcement officials initially arrested 18-year-old Kumari Powell near his home in Las Vegas on Oct. 8 this year on suspicion of being a fugitive from another state, but then extradited him on Wednesday and arrested him on suspicion of murder. He is now being held on a $2 million bail.

Detectives expect to present their case to the district attorney’s office later this week for filing consideration. They ask anyone with information about the incident to call detectives Sean Magee or Adrian Garcia at 562-570-7244.
