Things are about to get a lot healthier at Cesar E. Chavez Park, much like other parks parks throughout the city.

This Saturday at 8:30AM—just two days after today’s Cesar E. Chavez Day—the city has invited the public to the grand opening celebration for the Cesar E. Chavez Park Fitness Zone and Loop.

The New Fitness Zone—located near the tot lot, picnic benches and restrooms, north of Fifth Street—is approximately 690 square feet and will feature six pieces of self-use exercise equipment, according to a city release. Three of those pieces are ADA-accessible and are all designed to engage users in healthy, physical activity.

“We are committed to supporting health and mobility for residents, and this is now the seventh Fitness Zone to open in Long Beach in the last five years,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “Residents can also exercise on free outdoor exercise equipment at Admiral Kidd, Coolidge, Orizaba, 14th Street, Bixby and Houghton Parks.”

The Fitness Loop includes a walking route through the park along with an equipment utilizing circuit.

“The Chavez Park Fitness Loop will further activate the park by offering a convenient, free option for fitness and healthy living,” said Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez in a statement. “I’m thrilled to be able to support residents’ efforts to lead healthy, active lifestyles.”

Funding for the projects included a $55,000 one-time infrastructure fund from the Office of Councilwoman Gonzalez and a $7,020 Greenfields Playground Equipment Grant. Installation of the new Fitness Zone and Loop began in February 2016 and was recently finished, the city stated.

Cesar E. Chavez Park is located at 401 Golden Avenue.
