An e-mail circulated to 900 LBUSD faculty members yesterday raised questions about the possibility of looming layoffs within the district.  The memo asks teachers to send information about their seniority and professional history with the district, which some say will make it easier for officials to decide who should be fired as the LBUSD deals with difficult budget challenges.

In July, the School Board voted to place a parcel tax called Measure T on the November ballot that would cost Long Beach property owners $92 per year, for the next five years.  If passed, the measure will help ease – but not solve – drastic troubles in the district budget. Boardmembers have been mulling possible ways to cut costs throughout the summer.

LBUSD spokesman Chris Eftychiou tells Press-Telegram reporter Kevin Butler in this article that the information could possibly be used for firings in March.  The district must alert faculty members by March 15 if they will not be needed during the 2010-2011 school year.
