A son of slain Long Beach Fire Capt. David Rosa will throw the ceremonial first pitch at a Dodgers game this weekend.

The team is hosting Rosa’s family at Saturday evening’s game against the San Diego Padres. Sam, one of Rosa’s two sons, will take the mound at Dodgers Stadium shortly before the game’s scheduled start time at 6:10 p.m.

Rosa, 45, was shot on June 25 at an apartment building for low-income seniors where he’d just helped douse a fire.

The gunman, 77-year-old Thomas Man Kim, had set off an explosion in his apartment trying to kill himself and his upstairs neighbor, according to authorities.

After rescuers arrived, Kim opened fire. He later told authorities he started shooting because he was scared, according to court documents.

Kim died in a jail hospital ward on Aug. 5 from a pre-existing medical condition. He’d long suffered from diabetes, according to his brother.

Rosa and his family lived in San Juan Capistrano where he volunteered for the local Little League.

“He just loved baseball, he loved being involved with his son, he loved seeing the other kids grow,” friend Todd Strane told the Long Beach Post. “… He was really a great guy, and people say that all the time, but with Dave it was so true.”
