UPDATE | A sheriff’s bomb squad has declared a suspicious device found near the Long Beach Airport safe, allowing nearby streets to reopen, according to Long Beach police officials.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Bomb Squad responded and has rendered the device safe, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said in an email at about 3:00PM.

9/29/16 at 2:42PM | A suspicious device reported near the Long Beach Airport Thursday afternoon prompted Long Beach police to activate the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad and close down surrounding streets, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to the 2900 block of Clark Avenue on Thursday, September 29 at 12:35PM regarding a suspicious device, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson.

“Upon arrival officers found a cylindrical tube approximately 12 inches, tied off with duct tape,” Johnson said in an email. “They determined the incident would require the response of the LASD bomb squad and they were called.”

At about 2:00PM, LBPD officials sent out an alert notifying the public that Clark Avenue between Spring Street and Airport Plaza Drive would be closed for an unspecified period of time due to the police activity.
