UPDATE | Long Beach health officials announced Tuesday evening that all swimming areas west of the Belmont Pier have been reopened following last week’s sewage spill that flowed into the Los Angeles River.

“Water testing results for all sites west of the Belmont Pier are currently in compliance with state water quality standards,” officials stated.

Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis is now issuing a general rain advisory for all recreational beaches and bays in the city following the rain experienced Monday night and Tuesday morning.

“After any significant rainfall, unhealthy conditions may result from increased runoff from storm drain outlets and rivers, which eventually reach the City’s beaches,” officials stated. “Recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm.”

The rain advisory will be in effect through Friday, March 2 and may be extended if more rain occurs before that date.

2/23/2018 at 10:17AM | By City News Service | Swimming areas west of the Belmont Pier in Long Beach remained closed today due to a sewage spill, authorities said.

About 9:00AM Thursday, an estimated 11,200 gallons of sewage spilled from a line controlled by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works at USC Medical Center, according to the City of Long Beach.

About 8,300 gallons of the spillage entered the storm drain and flowed into the Los Angeles River.

Water testing will continue until results are in compliance with state water quality standards, city of Long Beach officials said.
