A closure of the eastbound SR-22 connector that caused backups along the I-405 through Long Beach all weekend ended early Monday morning with the completion of a major traffic switch at the much-used interchange.
During the 55-hour closure, which began on Friday night, Orange County Transportation Authority and CalTrans crews worked non-stop to reconstruct the bridge that connects the southbound 405 with the eastbound 22. The new connector is now prepared to accommodate the carpool connector currently being built, however, the old bridge still needs to be demolished.
The weekend of August 17 and 18 will see a 20-hour full closure of the entire 405 freeway to allow time for the old connector to be demolished.
Traffic through the weekend was backed up on the 405 all the way back to the 710, California Highway Patrol reported. Greater jams are expected the weekend of the full freeway closure.
