A preliminary investigation found that a white 1997 Ford Explorer, being driven by a 70-year-old Long Beach resident, was traveling westbound on Broadway when it hit an elderly Seal Beach woman at the intersection of Broadway and Orizaba Avenue at about 7:28PM, said the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) in a statement.

The female pedestrian, later identified as 88-year-old Shirley Hyman of Seal Beach, was attempting to cross Broadway at Orizaba in an unmarked crosswalk from the north curb when she was struck while in the westbound lanes of Broadway, police said.

The driver of the car that hit the woman immediately stopped his vehicle to check on the pedestrian, who was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and was pronounced dead that evening.
