9:30am | Really, the frustrating thing about the City of Long Beach’s press release on how to stay cool and hydrated during these hot summer days is that we didn’t have a reason to talk about this stuff until mid-July. Really, summer?

But, now that Long Beach weather has gone from cold and dreary to Mojave hot, make sure you’re taking the proper steps to stay cool out there. Predictions are in the high 80’s today and could rise through the weekend.

Suggestions such as staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water apply to everyone, but especially those who are very young, very old or participate in outdoor activities. That adorable girl in the photo has the right idea.

Also, if you’re working or playing outdoors, make sure to take frequent breaks. Wear loose clothing or a hat for shade, and drink plenty of fluids (but not alcohol or caffeinated drinks).

Try to plan your outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day, and don’t start out at Usain Bolt Speed. Take it slow at first and work your way up to more strenuous activity. Take refuge in air-conditioned environments like stores or malls, and frequently check on the frail or elderly to lend a hand if needed.

And of course, never leave a pet or child in a parked car.

If the weather continues to pose a heat risk, the City will open “community cooling centers.” We will provide information on where and when those centers open if they become necessary.
