Gilbert Portugal was born on July 31,1929, and called home by our Lord in Heaven on September 21, 2020. He was born to his parents Laureano and Socorro Portugal in the Pebbly Beach area on the beautiful island of Catalina. Gilbert remembered fondly the typical childhood mischief that he would get into, along with his younger siblings Lawrence Jr. and Carmen while growing up in Catalina. When WWII broke out, his family relocated to the city of Los Angeles and he was blessed with another sister, Josie and brother, Eddie. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1948, and was drafted into the Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War as an anesthesiologist technician. He liked to say “I put people to sleep…. but I always woke them up.” In 1953 he was honorably discharged from the military and attended Los Angeles Trade-Technical College where he received his certificate in Auto Mechanics. It was that same year while attending a friend’s wedding that he was reunited with a neighborhood family friend, Angie who would become the Love of his Life. Angie saw Gilbert, they shared a dance and decided to never let go of each other. They were married on November 20, 1955, raised four children, and lovingly shared almost 65 years together. Throughout his career, he worked as an auto mechanic, an airplane assembler, and finally as an assembler for the military’s MX Missile system until he retired in 1992.
During his retired years he enjoyed the company of his wife, children, grandchildren and even a great grandson, sharing his love and life’s stories and his constant silly jokes….the cornier, the better! He had a big, wonderful family, and he was so proud of every one of them. He was there with wise advice when any of his family asked for or needed it, and was a strong protector to all his family. We all feel so fortunate and blessed to have been able to celebrate his 91st birthday with him this past July. Each one of his family members and friends all have their own special memories of him. The world is a much better place because of Gilbert Portugal and his beautiful memory and love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever more.
He is survived by his wife and forever love, Angie, his children, Magdalena Waidner, Monica Potter, Gilbert Portugal Jr., and Gregory Portugal, their spouses, Daniel, Patrick, Patricia, and Marisela, his grandchildren Brian, Daniel, Stephanie, Alexis, Kristie, Rebecca, Jessica, Dominic, and Nicolas, a great grandson, Liam (born on his Big Papa’s birthday 85 years apart), and four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
