Yesterday afternoon in Los Angeles, No. 16-ranked Long Beach State’s (18-12) 10-game road trip finally came to an end, as Loyola Marymount’s Angelo Songco had a grand slam in the fourth inning to lead the Lions to a 7-3 victory.

Jason Corder homered twice and went 4-for-4 in the loss. It was the first multi-homer game since Corder did it last year against Texas.

The grand slam by Songco in the fifth inning gave LMU a 6-1 lead. LBSU starter Brett Lorin (1-2) could not get out of the inning, putting the first two runners on base, before Tyler Topp walked one and gave up the home run. Lorin gave up the first four runs on five hits.

During the 10-game road trip LBSU’s starters have combined for a 1-7 record and 7.38 ERA. LBSU went 1-9 on what is believed to be the team’s longest regular season road trip since 1954, the school’s first season.

Corder’s RBI single in the first off of Lee Roberts gave LBSU a 1-0 lead. An LMU sacrifice fly in the third inning tied it at 1-1, before a Sean Dovel solo home run made it 2-1 in the fourth.

Long Beach State returns home this weekend to host four straight, beginning with a three-game series with UC Irvine starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s game is at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s game is at 1 p.m. Prior to Sunday’s first pitch, LBSU will honor the 1998 College World Series team in a pre-game ceremony. On Tuesday, April 15, the Dirtbags will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first college game at Blair Field between Long Beach State and Long Beach City College.
