It’s been a great week so far for the Poly girls’ track team.  It’s Wednesday and they’ve already been honored by the Long Beach City Council and invited to the Nike Track Nationals on July 2nd in Eugene, Oregon.

The final meet on the 2010 season is a new Nike-sponsored team competition for the top 12 programs (boys & girls) in the nation to come to Hayward Field on July 2, the night before the Prefontaine Classic.

The meet will have free admission as the teams contend in 10 events: 100 meters, high hurdles, 400, 800, mile, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put and discus. Teams will enter their best athlete in each event, and no athlete can enter more than two events; a specially designed decathlon-like scoring system will determine the team winners.

The Poly girls are tops in the region, state and nation with a “Nike National” total of 8381 (+26).  The boys are fourth in the state and ninth in the nation with 7941 (-99).  The boys finish just one spot out of an invitation–in two ways.  The top 8 teams from each region are invited, as well as the next best four scores in the nation–the Poly boys’ team has the fifth best of the non-regional winners.
