Long Beach City College (LBCC) announced its selection of a new athletic director today: Randy Totorp, a former Long Beach City College head coach who led the men\u2019s volleyball team to three state championships and served as interim athletic director of LBCC from 2011 to 2013.<\/p>\n

According to a release issued today, Totorp\u2019s selection was decided by the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees on Tuesday and most recently served as director of athletics and kinesiology at El Camino College in Torrance.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am pleased to welcome Randy Totorp back to Long Beach City College as our new athletic director,\u201d said LBCC President Eloy Ortiz Oakley in a statement. \u201cRandy is very well-respected among his peers in California community college athletics and an enthusiastic supporter of our student success initiatives here at LBCC. He has a great vision and solid plans for the future of our athletic program and I know he will continue our outstanding Viking winning tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n
Totorp is scheduled to return to LBCC on September 14. His former gig as head coach of LBCC\u2019s men\u2019s volleyball program culminated with winning three state championships (2004, 2006 and 2009) and seven Western State Conference titles. <\/p>\n
Totorp himself is a product of LBCC, playing two seasons with the men\u2019s volleyball team (1994 and 1995), before transferring to San Diego State and earning a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Social Science in 1997. <\/p>\n
In 2001, Totorp received a master\u2019s degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University after earning a teaching credential from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1999. He lives in Rossmoor with his wife and two children, according to the LBCC release. <\/p>\n
\u201cI am very grateful for this opportunity to lead the Athletic Department at Long Beach City College,\u201d said Totorp in a statement. \u201cAs an LBCC alumnus, I am so proud of the tradition of athletic and academic excellence at this College. I am very fortunate to once again serve the great community of Long Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n
