The Compton Tarbabes’ bats came alive against Poly at Blair Field on Friday afternoon, but base-running mistakes and some sharp pick-off throws by Poly pitchers kept them from converting them into runs. <\/span>Through five innings, Compton had eight hits, the same as the Jackrabbits—but Poly had converted eight runs from the opportunities, to Compton’s none. <\/span>The ‘Rabbits went on to win 10-0, setting up a Tuesday showdown with Lakewood for second place. <\/span><\/p>\n The Tarbabes, who were three players short and using a nine-player roster for the afternoon, also defended pretty well, keeping the Poly bats mostly contained—the Jackrabbits didn’t score more than two runs in an inning until the bottom of the fifth. <\/span>Compton also had three recorded errors—no fielding error is a good one, but they weren’t badly hurt until a ball scooted by their right-fielder in the bottom of the fifth, sending ‘Rabbit Tyler Maxwell all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.<\/p>\n Eric Gonzales started on the mound for Poly, and was relieved by Noah Barrick; Danny Guiterez went the distance for the Tarbabes.<\/p>\n Poly improves to 6-4, and can take second place with a win over Lakewood at Blair in Tuesday’s nightcap. <\/span>Compton falls to 1-9, and will next face Wilson on Tuesday at 3pm, on the Bruins’ campus field.<\/p>\n Wilson Blanks Cabrillo<\/p>\n The Bruins used great performances from Tanner Perkins and Cody Harris to take the Jaguars down, 6-0. Wilson (6-5) kept pace with Poly and stayed a half-game back from Poly in the race for third place.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
