The Compton Tarbabes hadn’t won a league game in at least a decade, until they pulled off a 5-0 win over the Cabrillo Jaguars Friday afternoon.  <\/span>When the final fly ball of the game headed towards Tarbabes right fielder Kendrick Ephriam, Compton head coach Brian Reed says that time slowed down.  <\/span>“It seemed like it took forever for the ball to come down—when he got it, everyone waited for him to show the ball, and then it erupted.”  <\/span>The victory came before a good-sized crowd on the Compton campus.<\/p>\n

The lion’s share of the credit goes to Danny Guiterez, Compton’s top pitcher who blanked a talented lineup of Cabrillo batters (including Wesley Madera, one of the league’s top bats this season).  <\/span>Guiterez pitched five innings, striking out eight—Pedro Vanegas got the save.  <\/span>Compton went up early, scoring two runs in the first inning, and three in the third.  <\/span>Oswaldo Ternero had two runs and a triple.<\/p>\n

“They deserved it,” said Cabrillo coach Erick Bryant.  <\/span>“They battled and didn’t commit any errors—I tip my hat to coach Reed, he’s doing a great job over there.”  <\/span>As we mentioned in our preview<\/a>, the Tarbabes are fielding a frosh\/soph, JV and varsity team this season, for the first time.  <\/span>Reed has also expanded his talent pool by bringing on an assistant football coach to help him run his program—it looks like the plans for the future are already paying dividends.<\/p>\n
