From LBSU reports<\/span><\/p>\n The LBSU softball team split the second day of the Campbell-Cartier Classic with an 8-0 victory over Utah State on Saturday morning and an 8-3 loss in the afternoon to UCSB. <\/span>Long Beach lost the tournament-opener to Stanford on Friday. <\/span>The 49ers are now 3-4 on the young season as they finish out the tournament on Sunday with a morning game against Washington and an afternoon match-up with San Diego State, the hosts of the Classic.<\/p>\n Long Beach 8, Utah State 0<\/span><\/p>\n Long Beach State wasted no time in getting on the board as senior Danielle Linke led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field. Junior Ashley Weber moved her over to third with a sacrifice bunt before senior Jennifer Griffin plated Linke with a double of her own. Junior Brandy Reyes followed with a walk to set up an RBI single for senior Jonae Perez and junior Jodi Nakawatase drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.<\/p>\n LBSU added two more in the third when Reyes led off with a double and came around to score with Kristen Pocock connecting for her second home run of the season.<\/p>\n The 49ers strung together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-0. After Griffin drew a walk to open the inning, the Aggies got Reyes to pop up and Perez to ground out. Pocock and Nakawatase then had back-to-back infield singles, with Nakawatase driving in Griffin. Freshman Jennifer Madigan followed with a shot up the middle to bring Pocock home.<\/p>\n In the sixth inning, junior Bridgette Pagano singled and eventually scored on an error by Utah State third baseman Rayna Bradshaw to end the game with the run rule in effect.<\/p>\n Sophomore Brooke Turner picked up her 19th career shutout, scattering just four hits while tying her season high with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.<\/p>\n The Beach had a well-balanced attack on the offensive end as seven different 49ers combined for nine hits. Junior Kristen Pocock led the way with a two-run home run, finishing the game with two hits, one walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Jodi Nakawatase also added a pair of RBIs.<\/p>\n With the victory the 49ers, who were ranked No. 24 in the latest ESPN.com\/USA Softball poll, evened their overall record at 3-3 and extended their win streak against former Big West member USU to 21 games.<\/p>\n UCSB 8, Long Beach 3<\/span><\/p>\n Long Beach State dented the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Brandy Reyes led off with a free pass and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Perez. Junior Kristen Pocock followed with another walk before both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Ashley Levine then singled to left field, scoring Pagano who was pinch-running for Reyes.<\/p>\n UCSB (5-3) responded in the next inning with three runs of its own. After retiring the first batter, Bridgett Pagano walked Keilani Jennings before Jessica Beristianos doubled. Tiffany Wright then drove in two runs with a single to left and Lainey DePompa followed with an RBI to give UCSB a 3-1 lead.<\/p>\n The 49ers wasted no time in evening the score with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Ashley Weber reached on a fielder’s choice before Griffin singled and Reyes walked to load the bases. Jonae Perez then came through with a shot up the middle to bring Weber home. With the bases still full, Pocock drew her second free pass of the game to score Griffin.<\/p>\n With the international tie breaker rule in effect, UCSB’s Katie McWhirter was put on second to start the eighth inning. Freshman Taylor Petty came in to relieve Kelly Cross after she had walked the first two batters to load the bases. Petty then gave up a two-run single to Christine Ramos and Jessica Ziegler drove in a run on the next play with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Beristianos then connected for a two-run blast over the left field wall to put the game out of reach.<\/p>\n Junior Bridgette Pagano earned the start, allowing three runs in 3.2 innings of work, but it was senior Kelly Cross who was credited with the loss as she allowed the go-ahead run in the eighth.
