{"id":4989,"date":"2009-01-15T07:45:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-15T07:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/sports\/poly-prevails-in-battle-of-league-s-best\/"},"modified":"2009-01-15T07:45:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-15T07:45:00","slug":"poly-prevails-in-battle-of-league-s-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/sports\/poly-prevails-in-battle-of-league-s-best","title":{"rendered":"Poly Prevails In Battle Of League&#8217;s Best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style='float:left;padding-right:10px;padding-bottom:5px;'><img src='images\/archive\/sports\/photo98479.jpg' align='left' \/><\/div>\n<p>         Palmer Pavilion was thick with excitement as the Moore League&rsquo;s only two undefeated teams warmed up to square off Wednesday night, but it was the home Poly Jackrabbits (4-0) that would leave with their unblemished record intact as they defeated the Jordan Panthers (3-1) in a display of Long Beach&rsquo;s two most athletic teams, 63-48.<\/p>\n<p>Poly forward Ryan Anderson filled up the box score for the Jackrabbits, leading the team with 16 points on 7-9 shooting from the field, along with six rebounds and five blocks.&nbsp; The 6&rsquo;7&rdquo; sophomore showed his versatility by dishing three assists and even stepping out to hit a three-pointer in the first half.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He&rsquo;s growing as a player,&rdquo; said Poly head coach Sharrief Metoyer, who is quick to point out that Anderson is still learning the game.&nbsp; &ldquo;He&rsquo;s just a sophomore, and tonight he stepped up and played big for us.&rdquo;       <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: 10px; white-space: pre; \"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" style='clear:left;' align='left' vspace='5' hspace='10'  src=\"http:\/\/i304.photobucket.com\/albums\/nn191\/LBPOSTphotos\/Sports\/IMG_0471.jpg\"   \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Poly guard Michael Mayes continues his hot shooting, the senior hitting three triples on his way to thirteen points.&nbsp; Junior forward Shelton Boykins used his athleticism to snag key rebounds and intimidate in the paint, his 6&rsquo;5&rdquo; frame snagging five rebounds and swatting two Panther shots.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Even through some of our valleys, we sustained and played well tonight,&rdquo; said Metoyer.&nbsp; &ldquo;Our kids knew what they needed to do &ndash; how Jordan would attack and how to stop them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>That potent Panther attack was certainly hindered by a combination of excellent team defense by Poly, and a crippling problem with finishing shots in the paint by Jordan.&nbsp; The Panthers shot a rough 28% from the field during the game.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We got to the basket in the first half but we couldn&rsquo;t finish,&rdquo; said head coach Ron Massey, whose wings found ways to penetrate during a third quarter run, but had trouble converting aggression into points.&nbsp; Senior point-forward Will Ervin, usually adept at attacking the rim, shot just 1-8 from the field and ended with four points.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t do the little things that we always talk about,&rdquo; said Massey.<\/p>\n<p>Junior guard Ranyard Tyler led the Panthers with 13 points and four rebounds, as fellow swingman Jesse Jones scored 12.&nbsp; Jordan forward Stephan Heard, one of the league&rsquo;s top big men, scored eight points and snared eight rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>Leading by just two in the second quarter, Poly rattled off a 12-2 run to take a 27-15 lead that would consistently stay in double-digits, and eventually reach as many as 19. <\/p>\n<p>Jordan had chances but couldn&rsquo;t stop Poly&rsquo;s precision attacks on the basket, breaking down defensively and allowing easy baskets when they badly needed stops.&nbsp; A second-half press was effective in forcing turnovers, as Poly has struggled against full-court pressure in each of the last three games.&nbsp; It wasn&rsquo;t enough to bring Jordan the win, but showed a chink in the undefeated &lsquo;Rabbits&rsquo; armor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We probably should&rsquo;ve gone to it sooner,&rdquo; said Massey.<\/p>\n<p>Metoyer acknowledged his team&rsquo;s trouble with full-court pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Hopefully, we&rsquo;ll improve on that,&rdquo; he said, adding that he sees many areas in which the 12-2 Jackrabbits can improve.<\/p>\n<p>By defeating Jordan &ndash; considered one of the Moore League&rsquo;s top contenders and certainly one of the two most athletic &ndash; Poly has squarely placed themselves in the favorite position after winning their past three games against top local competition.&nbsp; This Friday, the Jackrabbits will host Cabrillo while Jordan welcomes 1-2 Wilson (14-5 overall).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Jordan Panthers are good.
