As promised in last week’s boys’ update<\/a>, this is a quick rundown of how all the girls’ teams in the league are doing as they progress through their nonleague schedules.  <\/span>This is going to be an interesting season, because besides Poly, there aren’t really any clear-cut favorites, so at this point it’s anyone’s guess who will get the remaining three playoff spots.  <\/span>Here’s what’s happened so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cabrillo<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Cabrillo is winless thus far, and struggling to get their footing under head coach Karen Candelaria.  <\/span>In their last defeat, yesterday against Keppel, they lost 66-22, and only mustered 9 points in the second half.   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Compton <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Compton is also winless at 0-2, having lost those games by a combined 111-49.  <\/span>They fell to La Serna (of Whittier) and Godinez, with both games part of the Fullerton Tournament held earlier this month.  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jordan<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Panthers aren’t struggling quite as much, with a 3-3 record and a high-powered offense.  <\/span>However, they have lost their last two games.  <\/span>That offense hung 70 points on the Manual Arts Toilers in a victory in the first round of the Inglewood Holiday Tip-Off Classic.  <\/span>They’re led by Montanique Washington and Danesha Long, who are averaging 13 and 14 points per-game, respectively, while Amber Washington and Artavia Gillard hold the team down in the middle, grabbing 15 rebounds a game between them.  <\/span>They’ll be taking part in the Magnolia Christmas Classic tournament starting tonight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lakewood<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sitting at 2-4, the Lancers are part of that middle pack that could break in either direction this season. We’ll get a good look at what kind of team they’ll be starting the day after Christmas, when they participate in a thick field at the Gahr Holiday Classic.  <\/span>The standout for Lakewood is sophomore guard Jasmine Balangue—the young guard is averaging nearly 10 points per-game, along with five assists, four rebounds, 2.5 steals, and a block.  <\/span>If she keeps filling the stat line, the Lancers could be a fun team to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Millikan<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Led by veteran coach Lorene Morgan, the Rams are looking for an identity after graduating their top-flight talents (particularly Courtney Clements) in 2008.  <\/span>They’re sitting at 3-3 right now after a trip through the tough Redondo Tournament.  <\/span>Jaslyn Cosey, a senior, leads the team in scoring with 14 points per-game, while shooting over 80% from the field.<\/span><\/p>\n

Poly<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

At 8-0, and having played some of the nation’s best teams, the Jackrabbits look like they haven’t lost a step, and should look to compete for a fourth-straight state championship this season.  <\/span>You can read about their recent win over nationally-ranked no. 2 Sacred Heart Cathedral by clicking here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wilson <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Bruins opened their season with a win over Poly—the Poly Parrots of Sun Valley, that is.  <\/span>They’re now 2-4 and part of the middle pack that could make things interesting.  <\/span>They’ll have some more tournament games before league play starts January 7th<\/sup>.  <\/span>The big name to watch for the Bruins will be junior forward Tiffany Bailey, who’s averaging 10 points a game.  <\/span>The six-footer is also pulling in 8 boards a game, second on the team, and she can shoot the three.<\/span><\/p>\n
