<\/div>\n The Long Beach City College women’s basketball team got in the win column for the first time this season thanks to a 61-44 rout of San Diego Mesa College on Wednesday night at the Hall of Champions Gym. The non-conference win improved LBCC to 1-6 overall.
Mesa led from the opening tip and rolled to a 13-4 lead at the 11:48 mark in the first half. But the Vikings scored the next eight points and completed a 23-6 run to take a commanding 27-19 advantage with 3:34 left in the half.
Long Beach led 31-23 at halftime and held its biggest advantage of 48-29 with 10:49 to go in the second. The Vikings were able to take advantage of 38 Mesa turnovers and converted them into 27 points. LBCC also earned 13 steals.
Long Beach had three players in double figures with freshman forward Karyse Payne leading the way with 15 points. Freshman forward Aysha Lyons had 13 points and sophomore guard Yumi Takano posted 10 points, four steals and three assists.
Mesa was led by Katherine Gerlek’s 17 points. She was 11 for 14 from the free throw line and also totaled a game-high 11 rebounds.
Long Beach returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 6) at 6 p.m. when the Vikings hosts L.A. Valley College in a non-conference game.<\/p>\n
