The bizarre effects that the Yorba Linda and Corona fires had on high school sports now includes CIF tennis. <\/span>Moore League champion Lakewood, a high seed, had been rolling through the CIF tournament, with a convincing victory over Downey—convincing enough to sub out their best singles player, even. <\/span>But their second round match against Los Osos, which had been scheduled as a Lancers home match to be played on Saturday, was delayed two days due to the wildfires, and the site location was changed to Los Osos.<\/span><\/p>\n So the Lancers drove out there Monday afternoon…and lost to the Baseline League champs. <\/span>The loss came on games, not matches, in the same frustrating tiebreaker method that eliminated Poly from the wild card round. <\/span>In HS team matches, three rounds are played, with six contests in each round—at the end of play, the team that has won the most matches wins the day. <\/span>Unless, that is, there’s a 9-9 tie the way there was for Poly, and for Lakewood on Monday. <\/span>When that happens, the match is decided by which team won the most sets, the total taken from all 18 matches. <\/span>Lakewood, like Poly, came up on the short end of the racket, falling 78-68 in the set total.<\/span><\/p>\n This cuts the Lancers’ promising run short, though they will still have athletes competing in the CIF Individual Tournament, which we’ll bring you coverage of this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n Wilson<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n The Bruins are likely determined to keep any of their team matches from going to the sets tiebreaker, and thus far they’ve been successful. <\/span>They won their first round match against Upland 14-4, and their second round match against Centennial\/Corona 12-6, leaving no doubt as to the outright winner. <\/span>They have now advanced to the quarterfinals, where they’ll face La Reina. <\/span>The Bruins will have to take a long road trip, way up the 101 to Thousand Oaks, to face La Reina on their home
