{"id":559,"date":"2012-03-19T06:05:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T06:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/sports\/lbcc-men-s-volleyball-swimming-diving\/"},"modified":"2012-03-19T06:05:00","modified_gmt":"2012-03-19T06:05:00","slug":"lbcc-men-s-volleyball-swimming-diving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/sports\/lbcc-men-s-volleyball-swimming-diving","title":{"rendered":"LBCC Men&#8217;s Volleyball, Swimming, &#038; Diving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>12:00pm |&nbsp;Men\u2019s Volleyball: No. 1 Long Beach gets back on track with sweep of Santa Barbara<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The No. 1 state-ranked Long Beach City College men\u2019s volleyball team responded to its first loss of the season on Wednesday with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 sweep over No. 9 Santa Barbara City College on Friday at LBCC. The Western State Conference win improved the Vikings to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.<\/p>\n<p>Each set was close throughout the match before Long Beach rallied late to pull out each win.<\/p>\n<p>In Set 1, LBCC and SBCC were tied at 20 before the Vikings got a pair of kills from freshman Greg Utupo (Mayfair HS), a kill from freshman Jo\u2019Lon Clark (Poly HS), and a kill from freshman Brett Anema (Valley Christian HS) that sealed the win.<\/p>\n<p>Set 2 was more of the same. This time Santa Barbara jumped out to a 12-10 lead before the Vikings rallied to jump back out in front. A block by Utupo and Anema gave the Vikings a 14-13 lead and eventually LBCC built up a 20-15 advantage.<\/p>\n<p>The Vaqueros didn\u2019t go down easy. Three straight hitting errors by the Vikings and an ace by Ryan McLouglin got SBCC within one point at 20-19. A kill by Anema was followed by Santa Barbara kills by Jordon Dyer and Aquiles Montoya to tie the set, 21-21.<\/p>\n<p>But Long Beach was able to win the final four points, getting kills from Utupo, sophomore Aniefre Etim-Thomas (Wilson HS), Clark, and a hitting error by SBCC\u2019s Cody Kreitzer gave the Vikings the set.<\/p>\n<p>The two teams played to a 5-5 tie in the third set before Long Beach took over. An error by Kreitzer gave LBCC a 10-6 lead and later back-to-back Long Beach blocks gave the Vikings a 17-11 advantage. A solo block from Anema on Colton Jones gave Long Beach set and match point.<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach appeared to play better as the match progressed. After hitting .175 and .323 in the first two sets, the Vikings hit an impressive .562 in Set 3 with nine kills and no errors in 16 attempts. LBCC also came up big at the net, totaling 21 blocks on the night.<\/p>\n<p>Utupo led LBCC with 11 kills to go with five digs and two blocks. Clark posted six kills, two aces, and two blocks, while Etim-Thomas had seven kills and four blocks. Anema led the Vikings with six blocks to go with five kills.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Max Wechsung (St. John Bosco HS) totaled 21 assists, three kills, and three blocks while sophomore Rob McLean (East Northport, NY) had five kills, two aces, and three blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Winslow led Santa Barbara (6-6, 1-4 WSC) with 12 kills. Dyer totaled 15 assists, five kills, and seven digs while Montoya chipped in with five kills and two blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach returns to action on Monday (Mar 19) when it travels to San Diego City College for a 3 pm non-conference match.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/m_image1332158598-90345.jpg\" style=\"margin-top: 1px; margin-right: 1px; margin-bottom: 1px; margin-left: 1px; border-top-width: 1px; border-right-width: 1px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 1px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; border-top-color: black; border-right-color: black; border-bottom-color: black; border-left-color: black; border-image: initial; \" alt=\"\"><br \/><em>Photo courtesy of Victor Posadas.<\/em><span>&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><strong><br \/>Men&#8217;s Swimming &amp; Diving: Vikings cruise to 174-89 SCC win over El Camino<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Long Beach City College men&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving team improved to 3-0 in South Coast Conference dual meets after a convincing 174-89 win over visiting El Camino College on Friday at the LBCC Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>The Long Beach men won 10 of 15 events with sophomore Bradley Adamson (Lakewood HS) &nbsp;and freshman Mac Aakhus (Bakersfield, CA) leading the way with two individual victories.<\/p>\n<p>Adamson took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:32.49) and 100-yard freestyle (49.97) while Aakhus won the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.72) and 200-yard backstroke (2:13.41). The duo also teamed up with sophomore Lance Reeves (Houston, TX) and freshman Brant Rider (Houston, TX) to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.70.<\/p>\n<p>Other winners for Long Beach included freshman Michael Carrillo (Servite HS) in the 50-yard backstroke (58.92), Reeves in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.02), sophomore Samuel Castillo in the 1 &amp; 3-meter dive (138.50 points), Ryan McDonald in the 200-yard IM (2:12.30), and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomores Matthew Collins and Anthony Frens, and freshmen Dylan Thompson (Los Alamitos HS) and Eric Zivirbulis (3:40.85).<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s Swimming &amp; Diving: Long Beach goes 1-1 in SCC dual meets<\/p>\n<p>The Long Beach City College women&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving team split a pair of South Coast Conference dual meets on Friday, beating El Camino College 70-57 and narrowly losing to East Los Angeles College 63-59 at the LBCC Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>The LBCC women, now 1-3 in SCC dual meets, were winners in eight of 15 events.<\/p>\n<p>Freshmen Jackie Rojas (Mira Costa HS) and Christine MacLennan (Millikan HS) led LBCC with three individual first-place finishes.<\/p>\n<p>Rojas won the 50-yard breaststroke (33.31), 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.28), and the 100-yard IM (1:09.75). MacLennan was first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.20), 100-yard freestyle (58.06), and the 50-yard butterfly (29.30).<br \/>The duo also teamed with sophomore Krysta Fryer (Wilson HS), and freshmen Carissa Buelna (Paramount HS) to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:07.37.<\/p>\n<p>Fryer also finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 12:15.37.<\/p>\n<p>The LBCC women nearly pulled off a double dual meet win, but needed to finish ahead of East Los Angeles in the final event of the meet.
