This is unheard of.  <\/span>With Misty May and Kerri Walsh’s gold medal victory<\/a>, Long Beach has already brought home one gold.  <\/span>But most people assumed that would happen—what’s ridiculous is that the other four teams with Long Beach players on them are all<\/i> still in contention—two of them playing in gold medal games, and the other two in the semifinals looking to get there.  <\/span>PLEASE keep checking back daily as we keep you up to date on how all the Long Beach athletes are doing—it’s never been this good, I assure you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Men’s Volleyball<\/b><\/p>\n

In a win-or-go-home quarterfinal match against number 5-ranked Serbia, the US Men’s team and their three Long Beach State grads won a nail-biter to advance to the medal round.  <\/span>They were down 7-9 in the fifth and final set (which plays to 15 points) before gutting out a 6-1 run to go up 13-10.  <\/span>LBSU grad David Lee, the top blocker in the tournament, has played out of his mind thus far, and was crucial to the win over Serbia, with 15 points.  <\/span>They’ll next play Russia in the semifinals—be sure to check the site later for a schedule of when the game will air.<\/p>\n

Women’s Volleyball<\/b><\/p>\n

Playing Cuba in the semifinals, the US Women proved they could have short memories when they needed to, putting the loss to Cuba in pool play behind them and dominating when it mattered, with a three sets-to-none victory to advance to the gold medal match.  <\/span>It will be the first time the US Women (and their two Long Beach State grads) play in that match since 1984.  <\/span>49er Tayyiba Haneef-Park led the team with 12 points, and fellow alum Danielle Scott-Arruda chipped in 9, both instrumental in the historic victory.<\/p>\n
