On Wednesday night of this week, the Long Beach PONY All-Stars defeated the team from Victoria at a game in Fullerton, capturing the Zone Championship, and qualifying to go to the PONY World Series for the second consecutive year. The World Series pits the top eight PONY teams—baseball players aged between 13 or 14—in the nation against each other, in a series of games held in Washington, PA. The Long Beach squad is used to the trip, having finished second in the nation at last year’s tournament. The championship this year will truly be a World Series, as one of the eight teams competing will be from Taiwan.<\/p>\n
The Zone Championship was a nail biter—the Long Beach All-Stars took a 7-1 lead after two innings, but Victoria chipped away at the lead steadily, pulling it to 7-6 before Long Beach put in Dan DeWolf. DeWolf allowed only one more run in the final three innings as Long Beach went on to win 10-7.
