<\/div>\nWith a win in last week’s AVP Crocs Slam Chicago tournament, Misty May-Treanor has now become just the fifth beach volleyball player in history to win 100 tournaments. She is the first woman to accomplish the feat. <\/p>\n
Of course, impressive accomplishments are as familiar to May as the sand between her toes. She won an NCAA championship while at Long Beach State, a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics with partner Kerri Walsh (after the two went undefeated there), and every team and personal award offered to beach volleyball players. She and Walsh are arguably one of the most dominant teams in American sports history—the win in Chicago marked their 90th consecutive match win, their eleventh tournament win this year (out of eleven tries), and their sixteenth consecutive tournament win. <\/p>\n
May’s accomplishment is even more impressive for the speed with which she accomplished it, after just 153 events—it took legend Karch Kiraly 180. May was nonchalant after the victory, according to LongBeachState.com. “Everybody kept saying 100 [wins], so I guess I knew it was 100,” she said. “But it’s a team sport, so I look more at the team success. The individual stuff is great, but I would never have gotten here if it wasn’t for (former partner) Holly (McPeak) and Kerri.”<\/p>\n
This August, May and Walsh will attempt to become the first beach volleyball tandem ever to win back-to-back gold medals. I’d say their chances are pretty good.<\/p>\n
