Three Long Beach libraries will be open for service on Mondays starting next week, with two more locations offering Monday hours starting next month, the city announced Thursday.

The Alamitos, Harte and Michelle Obama Neighborhood Libraries will all operate on the following six-day schedule starting next week:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m.
  • Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m.
  • Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Six-day service at the Alamitos Neighborhood Library, though, is temporary while renovations are underway at the Bay Shore Neighborhood Library. Once Bay Shore reopens, it will take on the six-day schedule, and Alamitos will return to a five-day schedule.

Burnett and El Dorado Neighborhood Libraries will begin offering Monday service in late September on the same schedule, according to the city.

Officials said in a statement that the libraries with expanded schedules were chosen “based on a variety of factors, including geographic distribution, socioeconomic indicators and redundancy of service within regions.”

“We are grateful to the City Council for enabling us to expand library access for our residents,” Director of Library Services Cathy De Leon said in a statement. “Libraries are such a vital resource for all and by expanding [our] hours we can continue to support our community with educational and enriching resources and computer access.”
