One person was killed and 2 others were seriously hurt when an SUV crashed on a Long Beach freeway transition road and ended up on its roof, according to a fire official.

The wreck happened around 3:30 p.m. on the transition road from the northbound 405 Freeway to the northbound 710 Freeway, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jack Crabtree said.

When firefighters arrived, 3 people were still trapped in the SUV, which had come to rest on a roadside barrier. Crews used the Jaws of Life to free the driver and passengers, according to Crabtree.

One person, a woman in her late 30s or early 40s, died at the scene, according to Crabtree. Paramedics took a man who was about the same age and a minor passenger to a local hospital in critical condition, he said.

Details on what caused the single-car crash weren’t immediately available.
