No one was injured Tuesday night when the pilot of a small plane had to make an emergency landing in the dry San Gabriel River bed.

The Long Beach Fire Department received a call about the landing in the river at Wardlow Road, near El Dorado Park, just before 7:30 p.m., LBFD spokesman Brian Fisk said.

The plane had left earlier in the day from Long Beach Airport and was returning when the engine cut out before it could get there, Fisk said. There was no fire or fuel leakage from the plane, he said, and the pilot was able to safely land without injury to himself or the passenger in the plane.

“The police department is assisting and trying to coordinate trying to figure out how to get the plane out of the river bed right now,” Fisk said.

Editor’s note: This article originally incorrectly referred to the small plane as a Cessna. It’s been updated. It has also been updated to reflect that the landing occurred near Wardlow Road, not Willow Street.
