Long Beach Symphony presents ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ (Thursday, Aug. 20)

Enjoy the 2003 Disney classic “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” in a new way: a live score performed by the symphony in sync with the film on the big screen. The event, open to kids and adults, will take place at the Long Beach Amphitheater at 8 p.m.

Artists and Makers Mixer (Thursday, Aug. 20)

Creatives of Long Beach are invited to bring and share their projects at a downtown networking “Makersville” event from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (301 The Promenade North). The event overlaps with a happy hour at nearby Buen Provecho from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and artisans can stop by for $3 street tacos and flautas and discounted beers and tequila shots.

Friday Night Lights Bike Ride (Friday, Aug. 21)

Join the city’s Walk & Roll Long Beach team for an evening group bike ride beginning and ending at Bixby Park. Riders will meet at 6:45 p.m. and suit up in reflective and glow-in-the-dark gear to promote visibility before they head out on a 4-mile ride through the city’s parks and community centers.

Taste of Downtown with KCRW Summer Nights (Saturday, Aug. 22, 2-10 p.m. | Pine & Promenade) – sponsored

Taste of Downtown, now in its 17th year, joins forces with KCRW Summer Nights for an afternoon and evening of food, drinks, music and community in the heart of Downtown Long Beach.

Presented by the DTLB Alliance, Taste of Downtown invites guests to sample bite-size offerings from local restaurants alongside beer, wine, and craft cocktails while enjoying live entertainment and activities throughout the event.

As the sun goes down, KCRW Summer Nights takes over with sets from KCRW DJs Nassir Nassirzadeh and Raul Campos, turning Pine Avenue into an all-ages dance party and celebration of Downtown. For more details, click here.

Shoreline Park Half Marathon (Sunday, Aug. 23)

It’s not too late to register for races along Long Beach’s Shoreline Park boardwalk. Runners can choose between a 5k, 10k or half marathon and shoot for personal records on the flat terrain. The courses include views of the ocean and Queen Mary and will be equipped with water stations. The top three men and women in each race will win awards. Yet all runners will take home a finisher medal and plenty of swag — as well as a free plate of tacos at the post-race expo. 

Residents who don’t want to lace up can spectate from a cheering spot of their choice along the course (see the map here). Gun times are at 7 a.m. for the half marathon, 7:15 a.m. for the 10k and 7:30 a.m. for the 5k. All races start from Shoreline Aquatic Park (200 Aquarium Way).

WeBreak Summer Recital (Sunday, Aug. 23)

WeBreak, a Long Beach-founded hip-hop dance school, presents their summer recital at the Nautilus Shell at Shoreline Village from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Kids interested in learning about hip-hop culture and how to breakdance can register for future WeBreak classes here.
