Long Beach is lucky to have Ellisa Alvarez.
When federal food assistance lapsed with last October’s government shutdown, the former chef posted in a Facebook group offering free food.
She thought she would get a handful of requests. Instead, she got hundreds.
Alvarez has turned that effort into a nonprofit that feeds about a hundred people each week with meals she cooks out of her apartment kitchen.
