Don’t just play in the mud, but learn about it, too. Not only will the children and parents who attend Mud Mania: A Celebration of Adobe get to experiment with adobe brick-making, construct a mini-adobe home and compete in mud relay races, but participants will get a well-rounded education this year with staff from Signal Hill Petroleum and El Dorado Nature Center.
Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site announced today that these two exciting new partnerships will coincide with their popular annual summer Mud Mania event to take place on Sunday, August 16.
“The oil industry uses many resources and scientific techniques to better understand the complex geology of the Earth’s crust,” said Stefanie Gillett, communications specialist for Signal Petroleum in a statement.
The company’s staff will be on site to demonstrate how oil is found, extracted and processed. Gillett added that Signal Hill Petroleum appreciates the opportunity to educate youth about how petroleum is a necessary part of everyday life with such a hands-on approach.
Staff from the city’s much loved El Dorado Nature Center will also be on-hand to provide a dirt exploration table, so children and their families can learn about the importance of soil to plants and animals.
“We will have two exploration bins filled with dirt, leaves and compost for guests to dig through and find the tiny critters that live in it, as well as books and educational materials on bugs and other decomposers that help create soil,” said Meaghan O’Neill, supervising park naturalist at El Dorado Nature Center, in a statement.
Show up to Mud Mania to not just play in the dirt, although that’s half the fun, but to learn a little something about its importance to everyday life, as well.
Mud Mania: A Celebration of Adobe will take place on Sunday, August 16 from 12:30PM to 4:30PM. Admission is $7 for adults, and $5 for children ages 4-12. Kids three and under are free. Food will be available for purchase from the B&R Old Fashioned Burgers food truck.
Mud Mania guests are required to park in the overflow lot across from our entrance or on the street; carpooling is desirable. No more than six children per adult, please. Shoes are required, except in the mud pit, and guests are encouraged to wear old clothes and bring a towel plus a change of attire for the ride home. “De-mudding” stations will also be available for limited clean up; showers will not be available.
