A magical fundraiser (Thursday, Sept. 18)

This week is Long Beach Gives, the city’s biggest annual fundraiser (support us here, please!), and nonprofits have all kinds of creative events happening to raise money.
The Bixby Knolls Community Foundation is hosting a magic mixer — complete with magicians, music by DJ Dennis Owens and cocktails by Beachwood Brewing & Distilling at the restaurant group’s Bixby Knolls taproom (3630 Atlantic Ave.)
Organizers say this is a “donation-based event, and everyone’s welcome — whether you make it a date night, girls’ night out, or just a reason to unwind.” Just 21+ please.
The event runs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. More info here.
Dark Harbor opening night (Friday, Sept. 19)

It’s not even October yet, but spooky season has arrived. Dark Harbor, the beloved Halloween spectacular at the Queen Mary, opens Friday and runs every weekend (and many weekdays) until the beginning of November.
There are six mazes — including Feast, about the ship’s cannibalistic head chef — and plenty of attractions like axe throwing and hidden speakeasies. Tickets start at about $45. Get them here.
A statewide beach cleanup (Saturday, Sept. 20)

Need a more wholesome activity? Here’s a great way to give back to your community.
California Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, with hundreds of cleanups scheduled across the state.
In Long Beach, there are five, all from 9 a.m. to noon.:
- Junipero Beach (2100 E. Ocean Blvd.)
- Belmont Pier (3998 E. Allin St.)
- Peninsula (72nd Place and East Ocean Boulevard)
- Mother’s Beach (5839 Appian Way)
- Alamitos Bay Marina (205 N. Marina Dr.)
Pre-register here. For more information, call the El Dorado Nature Center at 562-570-1745.
A free magic show (Saturday, Sept. 20)
More magic! I guess we have a theme this week.
The local chapter of The International Brotherhood of Magicians is hosting a stage competition where anyone is welcome to come vote on their favorites. It starts at 7 p.m. at the North Senior Center, 3333 Saint Cloud Drive in Seal Beach.
The event is free and family-friendly. More info here.
A ‘Trashion’ show (Trash + Fashion = Trashion) (Sunday, Sept. 21)

If you don’t want to pick up trash this weekend, you can watch it on stage, and it’s still for a good cause.
Creative Art Events is putting on a Trashion show to promote sustainability.
It’s at the Long Beach Playhouse (5021 E. Anaheim St.), with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the program starting at 7. You can get your tickets for about $20 here.
