A 24-year-old Long Beach man was killed and a woman was injured late Friday night following a shooting near MacArthur Park, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. in the area of 14th Street and Walnut Avenue. Police say the victim—who was identified as Duwayane Thomas—was in the area when three other men approached and shot him multiple times in the upper body without provocation.

As the suspects were fleeing, they also shot at a woman who was driving nearby, striking her multiple times in the upper and lower body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

People who were in the area when the shooting occurred provided aid until police arrived, authorities said. When officers got to the scene, they located the victims and rendered life-saving aid to the woman until paramedics responded to the scene. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived soon after and transported both victims to a local hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

The man died from his injuries while at the hospital, according to the LBPD. But the woman is in stable condition, police said. The two victims were not known to each other, police said. It is not clear if the victims knew the gunmen.

Friday’s deadly shooting came hours after another man was shot near Bixby Park, leaving him in critical condition. Police say the two shootings were not related. No arrests have been made in either case.

The LBPD has now reported 20 homicides so far this year, six more than the city had experienced by this time last year.
