Regarding the success of a recent petition to get a “living-wage minimum” on the November ballot, a group of hospitality workers and their supporters will hold a press conference today at 1:00pm to discuss their petition success and further details.
The initiative would require hotels with more than 100 rooms, the Long Beach Airport, and the Long Beach Convention Center to pay workers a minmum of $13 an hour, furthermore giving Long Beach voters the opportunity to improve living standards for Long Beach’s hospitality workers. This was followed by a 2009 labor study that revealed many Long Beach hospitality workers live in poverty despite hotels receiving taxpayer subsidies to the tune of $750 million since 1980.
More details to follow after the press conference.
