A 40-foot sail boat has been stranded on Cherry Beach since Wednesday, authorities say.

The Long Beach Fire Department’s marine safety division has been fielding calls since Wednesday night, when crews first responded to a call for a sail boat in need of assistance at 8:45 p.m.

The boat remains stranded, despite several attempts to pull it off the beach, said Marine Safety Chief Gonzalo Medina. The vessel’s heavy keel is lodged firmly in the sand.

“That’s the part that’s giving everybody trouble,” Medina said of rescue efforts, whose department is guarding the stranded boat, but has handed over responsibility for its removal to salvage company Sea Tow in Huntington Beach, which was contracted by the vessel’s owner. “If it had been a powerboat without a keel, it would probably be off the beach right now,” Medina added.

According to Medina, the company will likely make another attempt at pulling the sail boat off the beach at high tide tonight, which is expected at 7:46 p.m.

There were no injuries or environmental impacts associated with the incident, authorities said.
