All lanes of the 405 Freeway were briefly closed in both directions in Redondo Beach at Inglewood Avenue after a crash involving a hazmat spill Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Authorities originally said the truck involved in the accident was carrying the very poisonous liquid hydrogen cyanide, but the Los Angeles County Fire Department later said hazmat units determined the the chemical was not hydrogen cyanide.

In a tweet, they identified it only as “a corrosive liquid,” a small amount of which spilled into the roadway. The freeway was completely reopened around 3 p.m., according to CalTrans.

If it had been a hydrogen cyanide leak, the concern would have been that the poisonous liquid becomes a gas at a low temperature, according to a spokesperson for the LACoFD.

There were no reports of injuries.

Editor’s note: This story was updated with more information from authorities including a clarification that the liquid was not hydrogen cyanide.
